Powerhouse Brisbane

"Powerhouse Brisbane - An interesting building where you can admire the arts and dine in style!"

This is a relatively new addition to the Brisbane art scene with the building being a derelict powerstation until 2000. It was then renovated in 2007 and the results are pretty stunning.

Here you can come to the theatre, view some wonderful art, appreciate music, festivals, view graffiti, see films or just enjoy a bite to eat.

Where is the Powerhouse Brisbane?

This interesting looking building (it was an old powerstation after all) is on the river at 119 Lamington Street New Farm.

It's probably too far to walk from the city so unless you have a car, it's best to get the bus (There are 3 bus services 196, 197 and 199) or the New Farm Park Ferry which is only a couple of minutes walk to the centre.

What To See And Do?

  • I'd start by having a look at what exhibitions and theatre performances are on. Expect the theatre acts to be contemporary, original, Australian and provide something for everyone - from intellectual to a good girls night out.
  • Some of the Music events are even free and often everything from well known names to querky new comers, jazz and more.
  • There is also a comedy theatre here too. Very popular on the weekends and Thursday nights too.
  • Visual arts are also on show e.g photographic exhibitions which generally change every month.
  • Don't forget to visit the Farmers Market every second and fourth Saturday of the Month. Get there early morning rather than lunchtime.
  • There's also a large array of Kids activities too - there's always something going on from films to book readings and creative play.
  • There are two restaurants on site, both of which have won awards for their food so you can't really go wrong. Bar Alto received a chefs hat (a bit like a michelin star but not as formal) and Watt Restaurant and Bar for a lovely Al Fresco dining or drinks experience.
