Melbourne Museum

"I left Melbourne Museum knowing so much more about the place, its people and history!"

This is a good "all rounder" of a Museum as it is so varied. There's lots to look at and enough to keep the kids occupied if you are bringing your family.

It's also really close to the IMAX theatre and you can get a combined ticket if you go to both. It usually shows 3D short films about dinosaurs or dolphins and it really does feel like you could touch them.

I think that's why this museum is perfect for families or those wanting to mix culture with a bit of fun.

Opening Times and Location

This museum is open every day. In fact I think it only closes for Christmas Day and Good Friday.

Perhaps this shows how popular it really is! I know it has won several awards.

It is located in the north part of the city in Carlton Gardens on11 Nicholson St.

You can walk depending on your hotel location, or another option is to get the free circle tram that stops at most of the major attractions in and around Melbourne.

Entry is free for kids but adults need to pay a reasonable $8 to get in.

What You Can Expect To See

There are currently 21 permanent exhibitions. Here are some of my favourites:

  • Bugs Alive - explore insects and spiders
  • Koori Voices Revealing the Aboriginal Culture
  • Exploring the Human Body
  • Belonging to Country - About how certain objects have important meaning to aboriginals
  • Dinosaur Walk Need I say more!
  • There's seriously so much to do and see here that you could spend an entire day here. Definitely my pick of all of the Melbourne Museums. It is particularly good at bringing the Aboriginal aspects to life with a whole centre dedicated just to this.

On top of that, there's an exhibition hall just for kids too.
