Kalbarri

"Beautiful scenery, great beaches and wonderful wildlife! "

Kalbarri is a great stop off destination for anyone thinking of taking a road trip along the western coast of Australia. It promises to have something for everyone and it certainly doesn't disappoint.

We enjoyed canoe treks, ocean sunsets, natural rock formations and saw some wonderful birds. This is the type of place you should stay for a few days to really make the most of it. I can't tell you how stunning the views from nature's window (pictured below) really are.

Getting to Kalbarri

The town is approx 600km north of Perth so is a great stop off destination for a Western Australia Travel Road Trip.

Getting here will take at least 6 hours from Perth and the nearest airport is still an hours drive out of the main town. You can fly with Skywest from Perth.

When To Come

There is enough to do here to come at any time of the year. But, I'd pick the summer months and shoulder season (i.e October to March)

The beaches along the west coast of Australia are stunning so it's best to come when you can actually enjoy the sunshine and the beach life.

That said, this area seems to have a nice temperature throughout the year.

What To See And Do?

There are lots of adventurous and more relaxing things to do here. These are my recommendations:

  • Take a canoe trek down the Murchison River. The scenery and rock formations make a perfect back drop. There are plenty of organised trips but we used Kalbarri Safari Tours.
  • Hike through some of the gorges if you are feeling a bit more adventurous. (try Kalbarri Tours)
  • The town is right on the Indian Ocean so soaking up the sun on the beach and watching an ocean sunset is truly beautiful. Take your own picnic down to the beach and enjoy a glass of bubbly whilst the sun sets.
  • Don't miss a trip to The National Park and the famous views from Nature's Window (picture above) The views from here are breathtaking. I'd also recommend seeing "Red Bluff" and "Z bend" too as these were also fantastic. If you are here between July and October you can expect to see over 800 wildflowers in bloom - such a beautiful array of colours.
  • Red Bluff is also a great place to see whales between June and December. It's basically a set of beautiful red cliffs that offer fantastic views. If you would rather be on a boat then that's also possible.
  • Don't miss feeding the Pelicans at 8.45am at the Kalbarri River front. You'll also get some interesting commentary where you can learn more about these lovely animals
  • If you fancy something more relaxing, then try a leisurely cycle along the coastline (Kalbarri Palm Resort hire bikes)or just chill out on the beach!

  • Where To Stay

Edge Resort Good location, near the beach with its own swimming pool. The Suites are particularly good here. Free WIFI throughout the building too.

Beach Resort This one is good for families and is geared to this market in particular. Play areas and good all round facilities. It's a 15 minute walk into the main part of town though.

Sea Front Villas Good location. Right in the heart of the town. Go for a sea view. Clean and comfortable.
