"A seaside town just outside of Melbourne with real charm!"

Inverloch is probably not on the top of most people's "must do" places to visit in Australia, but this is a great stop off destination as part of a road trip, or even if you fancy getting out of Melbourne city centre for a while. It's quite a sleepy town with the main attraction being its shell museum. Still, we really enjoyed our over night stop here and would recommend it to anyone on route to or from Sydney to Melbourne.

Where Is Inverloch?

You'll find this seaside town about an hour's drive from Melbourne so a long drive from Sydney (at least 9 hours).

It's close to Phillip Island (54km) and as such it's a great place to stay to discover the surrounding areas.

Wilsons prom National Park is about an hour from here too.

Why Stop Here?

Inverloch is pretty much surrounded by water. The main town faces Anderson Inlet which means calm and sheltered waters.

But it is also part of the Bass Straight so Venus Bay has more adventurous waters for those that fancy it!

The town itself is along one or two main streets so it's not huge. There are a couple of nice cafes and restaurants but its really scenery that is so great here.

We really liked the shell museum. It's only a small room full of glass cabinets which just have shells in them! But the collection is pretty impressive - it's got one of the largest collections in Australia. There are some very funky looking shells to admire!

One of the great things in this area is the 12km scenic drive between Inverloch and Cape Paterson. The route follows a marine park and the views are really beautiful.

This is not the place to party. This is a good place to relax and unwind and enjoy the views!

Where to Stay?

This seaside town has a good selection of accommodation due to its proximity to Melbourne - they come here to get away from the city bustle. Have a look on you fancy staying around here for a few days as you might find a nice holiday home.

For a short stay my recommendation would be:

RACV Resort - a beautiful resort with outstanding views. It's just a bit too far from the town to walk in and out but there is a good beach near by. I found the service "just OK" but friends have been since and said service was good.
