"Find the Best Hotels in Canberra"

As you'd expect from the Nation's Capital, there are heaps of great hotels in Canberra - tricky bit is choosing which one.

This page will give you my top picks and a personal recommendation at the end.

If you are planning to stay here at the weekend and for a sight seeing holiday then I would consider not staying right in the city - it really is like a ghost town - soul-less and lacking atmosphere.

But if you are here in the week or here for business then the city is a good option.

Best Hotels in Canberra City

You can check out my Canberra map page where most of the below hotels are highlighted so you can see the locations of each one:

Map of Canberra

Olims Hotel and Homestead This is the sister hotel to the Novotel and a good option. Close to the Australian War Memorial and so you can walk into the city from here too. Everything else though would require public transport or a car. Nice oldey worldy type place

Diamant Hotel a boutique hotel getting good reviews but you either love it or hate it. This is more modern and chic than the usual hotel but others have said too basic!. The food here is great - try the tapas bar and have a cocktail too.

Hyatt Hotel Canberra – best location for museums and has an old world charm as its a heritage listed building. It does mean that if you are near the museums you are not really in the city so its a choice. Breakfast is good but overall this is an expensive experience to stay here! Come for high tea if you can’t afford to stay here. This or the one below would be my picks if you intend to stay in the city and you can afford it.

Crowne Plaza - another good location right next to a lovely park and near the pedestrian section of the city. Facilities like the pool area are nice and breakfast was good too. Right next to the casino too if you like that sort of thing. You pay top dollar for this place though but a great option if you can afford it.

  • Novotel Hotel Canberra- good location in the city right next to a shopping centre and the bus interchange. Still relatively pricey and tends to attract those on business. It has a pool and spa. Parking underneath the hotel is pricey at $15 a day and the parks are really tight!

    Mantra on Northbourne

Realm Hotel - 5 star with a large gym and lovely facilities. The bar is pretty happening on a Friday night too. Seems to attract business people but still good for families or anyone here for a few days. Good if you can get a last minute deal to bring the price down!

Personal Recommendation: Another option is to stay in one of the suburbs. I find the city centre a bit soul-less, particularly at weekends. We stayed in Kingston in a lovely 2 bed apartment. This suburb is very close to New Parliament House so is fine if you intend to hire a car. There is a lovely row of shops, cafes and restaurants right outside the hotel. It was buzzing in the evening and we got a real sense of what Canberra is really like.

    Griffin Hotel, Kingston

YHA Canberra City – a good hostelUniversity House – basic but good value

    Poachers Trail

    Ginninderry Homestead B&B

    The Globe Inn

    Country Guesthouse Schonegg

    Budget Hotels in Canberra

There aren't heaps of affordable and good hotels to be honest but these are the better ones:

Kurrajong Hotel - good location for Parliament House. Rooms are Ok but starting to date. Staff OK but depends on the day. Not heaps of choice for kids in terms of their menu choices.

Statesman Hotel - You need a car if you plan to stay here as its a little out of both the city and Capital Hill where Parliament House is. Rooms are OK and there is a lovely book shop cafe round the corner that serves a great breakfast and good coffee.

Formule 1 - So you no what to expect from these hotels?? Very very basic with no staff, usually an electronic key pad to check in and then into your room. But it's clean, cheap and is centrally located. Parking is not secure but it is free. There's places to eat in the local shopping centre nearby. For approx $100 this is a true budget option.

Or if you want more of a hostel:

YHA Canberra City – a good hostel, central location

University House – basic but good value
