Green Island Australia

"Green Island Australia - Great for snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef!"

This is one of the great island getaways suitable for a day trip from Cairns. If like me the idea of getting on a boat in choppy water is really not your thing, then this could be a great way to explore the Great Barrier Reef Australia.

To get to the Barrier Reef you usually have to get on a boat that takes well over an hour to get to the pontoon. Green island however is shorter at about 45 minutes if you get the fast boat.

How To Get To This Island?

Cairns in tropical North Queensland, is the gateway to this island and ferries depart every day several times a day.

Journey time varies from one hour to 45 minutes depending on which service you take.

Best time to come is during the dry season between May and October. You can come outside of these times but expect there to be lots of rain and a choppy boat ride over.

What To Do On Green Island

No surprises, but this island really focuses its activities around the water:

  • Hire Snorkelling Gear
  • Enjoy diving
  • Glass Bottom Boat
  • Half Submarine which has glass sides
  • Helmet Diving - a great option for those who aren't strong swimmers or dislike the idea of breathing underwater like you do in diving. Here you get to walk on the sandy sea bed with your head in what can only be described as a space helmet!
  • Then there are some great beaches which offer relaxation.

Or why not try one of the rainforest walks that head inland.

    Where To Stay?

There is only one place to stay and that is a 5 star resort called Green Island Resort. It's pricey at around $550 per night.

The facilities are great but I have heard that it feels like you are being invaded every day between 10am and 4pm because of the sheer number of day trippers to the island.

Something to consider before you go!
