Famous Australians

"Famous Australians - Which one is your favourite?"

When you start to read the list below, you'll see that there is an abundance of talent here in Australia.

There are 1000's of Australians worthy of appearing below but I have decided to focus on the ones that are the most well known in the media. That means that I have excluded famous Australians who may have invented something or won a noble peace prize or won Australian of the Year.

Instead the list below focuses on actors, actresses, singers, bands, entertainers and sports stars...

Famous Australians - Actors

Here are the ones that I think are THE most famous actors and actresses:

  • Paul Hogan - Best known for his starring role in the Crocodile Dundee movies, Paul Hogan has become an Aussie Legend. He lived just outside of Sydney and first made it big by starring and writing in his own comedy show. He went on to the face of Australian Tourism and Fosters Beer Ads that broadcast around the world and lines such as "Throw another shrimp on the Barbie" are still used today
  • Mel Gibson - Born in New York but moved to Sydney with his family when he was 12. Mel studied the dramatic arts here in Sydney and is probably deservedly on this famous Australians list for the Lethal Weapon movies and his role as Braveheart. My personal favourite is "What Women Want!"

  • Russel Crowe - Born in Wellington New Zealand and came to Sydney with his family when he was 4 years old. He went to Sydney Boys High School but didn't study drama - his family were in the theatre business. He went on to star in the blockbuster Gladiator which is when he really hit the big time. Today he has an amazing apartment at the end of Woolloomooloo wharf in Sydney.
  • Nicole Kidman - Both her parents are Australian but were studying in Hawaii at the time of Nicole's birth. They returned to Sydney when Nicole was 4 where she went to Lane Cove High School and then went on to study drama in both Sydney and Melbourne. She is probably most deservedly on this famous Australians list for movies like Moulin Rouge, Days of Thunder (where she met her first husband Tom Cruise) and The Hours. It was the film "Dead Calm" where she got her first big break
  • Cate Blanchett - Born in Melbourne where she went to school and then went on to study economics and the arts before going travelling. She then returned to Australia to study drama. Her most famous films include Elizabeth I, Babel and Benjamin Button.
  • Olivia Newton John - Another Aussie Icon and well worthy of being on this famous Australians list. She was born in Camebridge in the UK and emigrated with her family to Melbourne when she was 6 years old. She is most famous for her starring role as Sandy in Grease along side John Travolta. Since then she has gone on to produce many albums. She also owns a very lovely spa in the hinterland behind Byron Bay called Gaia.
  • Hugh Jackman - Born in Sydney Australia and studied communications at Uni in Sydney, doing a final year in drama to make up his credits. It was this year that gave him the passion to perform. He is most famous for his role in the film Australia as well as his stage performance in the Boy from Oz.

  • Famous Australians Bands and Singers

    Famous Australians - Sports People

  • Sir Donald Bradman - This is perhaps the only dead person I have included in this list of famous Australians but he has to be here as he is a total cricketing legend to the Australians. He is well known as being the best batsman ever with an amazing batting average of 99.94. He has his own museum and has even appeared on Australian coins.
  • Cathy Freeman - The first Aboriginal Athlete to win an Olympic Medal. She won gold at the 1994 Commonwealth Games for the 200m and 400m sprint. She went on to win the 400m Gold Medal in the 2000 Olympic Games held in Sydney. She also had the honour of lighting the Olympic Torch. She has now retired from sport and has been awarded "Australian of the Year" too (1998)
  • Dawn Fraser - A very famous Australian Swimmer who has won medals in 3 consecutive Olympic Games for the 100m Freestyle. She is from Balmain in Sydney and since retiring from swimming, has had a pool named after and owns a pub called the Riverview Hotel in Balmain.
  • Rod Laver
  • is Australia's most famous tennis player. He was ranked no.1 during the period 1964 to 1970 and is one of very few tennis players to win the Grand Slam twice (all 4 major single titles in one year) The Australian Open is held in the Rod Laver Tennis centre every January.

    Other Famous Australians

  • Elle Macpherson - Originally from Sydney, Elle enrolled to study law here in Sydney but headed to New York for a year to earn some money to pay for her law books. It was during this visit that she started modelling. She is probably best known for her front cover appearances in Elle and Swim Wear publications. These days she is best known for her lingerie "Elle Macpherson Lingerine lines and "Body" products as well as being a judge on the UK's "Next Top Model" TV series.
  • Rupert Murdoch - Born in Melbourne and attended the elite Geelong Grammar School. He then went on to Oxford University in the UK. He returned to Australia to take over the family newspaper business. In the 1960's he took over the News of the World in the UK and various other papers in the 1980's. He started to expand into the US where he became a naturalised US citizen in 1985. He formed BskyB in 1990 and is probably most well known currently for the scandal surrounding The News of The World and phone tapping
  • Rolf Harris - Originally from Perth in Western Australia, Rolf moved to the UK in the 1950's where he went on to have his own children's TV show about Art. He is also known for his singing and the invention of the wobble board - he likes to use unusual musical instruments. Now in his 80's, we don't hear much from Rolf but he certainly was a well known Australian character in my childhood
  • Clive James - Originally from Sydney but moved to the UK in the 1960's and has since lived there. He is well known for his chat shows and TV programmes but is a gifted writer too
  • Barry Humphries - Better known as Dame Edna Everage, a Victorian hosuewife. His character has brought him international acclaim. He has also appeared in many theatre productions and films.
  • Steve Irwin - The famous crocodile man and owner of the Australia Zoo just outside of Brisbane, who sadly died from a stingray incident. Visit my page on Australia Zoo for more information.
