Eden NSW

"Eden NSW - a Great stop off between Melbourne and Sydney!"

A trip down the East Coast of Australia is a great idea and the town of Eden is a great place to stay between Sydney and Melbourne.

Eden is about 550km from Melbourne (about 7 hours, making it almost equi-distant between Sydney and Melbourne. It is a beautiful river town. It has many beaches nearby and is surrounded by great scenery including national parks. The star attraction is the Killer Whale muesum, which is a great way to spend a few hours. These creatures are truly beautiful.

How Long to Come For and When?

If this is part of a Sydney to Melbourne road trip, with limited time, I'd only spend a night here.

There is enough to do in the area to spend a few nights should you want to.

Eden NSW's activities tend to revolve around the water, so coming here in summer or the shoulder season (November to March) is probably best. Winter tends to be cold and not beach weather (around 14 degrees.)

The Killer Whale Museum at Eden NSW

Firstly, it's VERY unlikely that you will actually see any killer whales as part of your tour. But this museum is done very well and shows the history of whaling and killer whales during the early 20th century.

There were approx 50 killer whales that visited the area back in the early 1900's. They would even help the local fisherman to bring in whales. It is a fascinating story and worth a visit to learn more about these lovely creatures and the local fishing history.

There is also a nice exhibition about the telegram service which the kids enjoyed too.

Other Activities in and around Eden NSW

In Eden itself, you can enjoy:

  • Whale Watching - The whales come right up into the bay during May and November. The Killer Whale museum even has a siren that it uses to alert the town when there are whales in the bay.
  • Bike Riding - There are some lovely tracks both for novices and mountain bike enthusiasts. There is a leisurely 2km ride around Curalo Lake or for the more advenuturous, head into Ben Boyd National Park
  • Fishing - This area is surrounded by water so you really are spoiled for choice. The waters are crystal clear (particularly around the sapphire coast)
  • A short distance from Eden you can enjoy some wonderful beaches:

  • Pambula Beach - This is north of Eden (a stop off along the Sydney to Melbourne Drive) and is an undiscovered secret of the region. It is mainly a surfing beach and is 6km long. The sands are pristine. The township of Pambula is also worth a little look as many of the old colonial buildings are still in tact.
  • Just next door from Pambula Beach, you will find Merimbula Beach, Lake and township. This is another great beach, with sections being patrolled during the summer, making it a safe place to swim.
  • Ben Boyd National Park is also worthy of a visit. There are plenty of walking tracks and mountain bike tracks. It's hard to choose the best walk, but we really enjoyed the leisurely 3.5km walk between Ben Boyd Tower and Leather Jacket Bay. You get to see the coastline, rock formations and beautiful beaches. There is also a very short walk to the red cliffs (known locally as the pinnacles,)which are a photographers dream due to the contrast of the white sandstone cliffs and the red cliffs.

  • Where to Stay in Eden NSW?

Sea Horse Inn This is more of a B&B style. A great place for lunch if you choose not to stay here. It's just outside of Eden but right on the beach

Twofold Beach Resort This is a good option for families. There are fully equipped cabins, good location, good facilities including bike hire, siwmming pool etc. It's just outside of Eden but has easy access to the beach. Try not to pick a cabin too near the pool in peak season as it could get very noisy.
