Crime in Australia

What is the crime in Australia like?

We are planning a trip to Australia next year and we are from a small town in the US where the crime rate is very low.

We are bringing my fairly elderly mother who is concerned about her personal safety. Should she be worried?

ANSWER

I have to say, I generally feel very safe here in Australia.

The cities are clean and well lit. Provided you don't go venturing way out into the far off city suburbs, crime rates are pretty low.

That said, there are a couple of watch outs. Clearly you still need to be careful especially in high touristy areas where pick pockets are known to lurk.

A couple of pieces of advice:

  • Always zip up your bags and know where they are at all times.

  • Be careful what you put in your back pockets and don't carry valuables with you like your passport - lock it up in the hotel safe.

  • Stay clear of rowdy pubs at about midnight - the odd fight is known to happen in the major cities - I doubt your Mother is up for being out that late anyway

  • My Mum got her bag stolen in Italy - they took a pair of scissors to her shoulder bag. I'm not sure what she could have done differently except look less like a tourist and blend in a bit more.

Don't hitch hike! It's not encouraged here. But somehow I can't imagine your mother being up for that!

Hopefully that helps put your mind at rest about Crime in Australia. - On the whole, it's a safe place to visit. This link will give you other ideas as to how to prepare for your trip.
