Cradle Mountain Tasmania

"Is this the most beautiful spot in Tasmania?"

Cradle Mountain Tasmania is arguably one of the most picturesque sights in Tazzie. Seeing it on a clear day is awe inspiring but is actually quite difficult to achieve. Tasmania is not blessed with the best weather so you have to be very luck indeed to catch this amazing site.

Whatever your view, Cradle Mountain is a MUST do for your trip!

Getting to Cradle Mountain takes more time than you think given the hair pin bends involved!

  • On route, visit nice villages where you can stop for refreshments (eg Deloraine)
  • Visit the wildlife park at Trowoona where you can see Tasmanian devils, Koalas, Kangaroos and lots more.
  • Once at Cradle Mountain, I’d suggest doing the walk around Dove Lake. This is the classic photo that you have no doubt seen of Cradle Mountain Tasmania with the reflection of the mountain in a lake infront of it. That’s Dove Lake and the walk is easy, probably taking about an hour. Look out for Wombats and other wildlife on your way round.
  • For the serious walkers amongst you, Cradle Mountain Tasmania marks the start of the Overland Track, a 6 day hike across stunning scenery and wilderness to Mount St Clair. It’s a hard walk and attracts thousands of international walkers every year. Accommodation is in huts or at campsites along the way and there is a national park fee of $160 if you choose to walk during peak season. You need to book yourself in early to take part in the walk and secure yourself some accommodation. There are also organised tours if you prefer the idea of having a guide with you.
  • Where to stay

  • Cradle Mountain Lodge – run by Voyages from $350 – brilliant for location and tours. A bit pricey as its run by Voyages
  • Lemonthyme lodge, just outside Cradle Mountain. Slightly cheaper and less convenient than the Wilderness lodge. Nice food and some wildlife.
  • Budget - Discovery Holiday Park - cabins from $200
  • For a cabin experience stay at Highlanders Cottage , very cosy. Homely and some wildlife. Very peaceful. From $120

Cradle Mountain Tasmania to Strahan or Launceston or Hobart 1-2 days

From Cradle mountain Tasmania you can either re-trace your steps and fly out of Launceston or drive down to Hobart to fly back to mainland Australia

If you can spare a couple more days then head onto Strahan to explore the West Coast of Tasmania Australia.

The roads here are very very windy with lots of hairpin bends. The West coast is much more rugged and so the scenery here is beautiful.

Queenstown is famous for its gold and copper and there is an underground mine tour that you can do.

Strahan is famous for Macquarie harbour where you can cruise the Gordon River . It’s also a good place for scenic flights over the region.Where to stay

Accommodation is limited and not that great. Try Risby Cove in Strahan from $180
