Cairns to Brisbane

(Abu Dhabi)

We ( Family of 5,kids are 15,13 and 8) depart Cairns 12th July heading for Brisbane. We depart Brisbane 19th July , flying to Melbourne. We arrive in Cairns on 7th July and hoping to see Cape Tribulation, Port Douglas, Great Barrier and Kuranda Train & Skyrail by 12th. We have 6 days to travel to Brisbane and see everything that needs to be seen, Frazier Island, Hervey Bay, Whit Sunday's etc. It's a 1700KM drive that takes 18 hours. My question is - what part do we take train or fly in order to see what's we need to and drive to those area's. I do not know this area at all. any suggestions , I am all ears

Cairns to Brisbane -drive or fly?
by: Johanna

Thanks Paul for your comments

It sounds like you have a very exciting trip planned.

You are right to consider flying some of the sections to maximise your team to see the best sections. You have covered all the right areas around Cairns.

The next section down to Whitsundays is pretty uneventful in my eyes. Townsville is the classic stop over but there really isn't much here. I'd look to fly from Cairns to the Whitsundays.

Then it is a very long drive down to Hervey Bay and again, I'm not sure the drive is worth it. I would certainly consider flying from the Whitsundays to Hervey Bay or Rockhampton if you want to do a bit of driving.

The most interesting sections that are worth the drive are Hervey Bay to Brisbane - stop off at Noosa, visit Emundi market and do the famous Australian zoo.

Hope that helps with your planning.
