Best Australian Rainforest Animals

"The best animals in the Rainforest"

There are lots of fantastic Australian Rainforest Animals.

A rainforest can be categorised as tropical, sub tropical or temperate depending on the amount of rainfall.

Tropical and subtropical rainforests are found in North Australia but can go as far south as New South Wales. Temperate rainforests are found in Eastern and Southeastern Australia

It is said that the rainforests of Australia may be 65 million years old. Whilst rainforests in Australia represent just a tiny proportion of the landmass of Australia, they offer the most amasing amount of interesting living things.

There are over 60% of the butterfly population of Australia, 30% of frog and marsupial species, 17% of bird species and 60% of plant species

If you want to get to know the rainforest animals then I would suggest heading to the following places which are all around Cairns.

  • Atherton Tablelands
  • Karunda just inland from Cairns
  • Daintree Rainforest, north of Cairns

  • For something different you could try Fraser Island. which has beautiful rainforests which are unusual as they grow in sand.

Or try Tasmania. The Walls of Jerusalem National Park is particularly stunning. Click here for more information on the best National Parks.

Below are some of the best Australian rainforest animals:

    Green Tree Frog

This is the best known frog in Australia’s tropics.

They have a distinct green colour although they can be olive brown, and are about 10cm in length. They have a deep “wark” type call.

They have a fascination with human habitats so its not unusual to find one in your toilet or in one of your pipes.

They are found throughout Australia (not in Victoria or Tasmania) and even in desert environments. You won’t find them in dense tropical rainforests.

They like hollows of trees or hiding under rocks and bark.

    Carpet Python

This is one of the most common snakes to be found in the rainforest. They are actually found throughout Australia from tropical forests to grasslands.

Carpet Pythons vary greatly in colour and size but generally they grow to about 2m in length and have lighter blotches on a darker background.

They can eat birds and small mammals including a small wallaby!

If you come across one it is unlikely to hurt you, rather slither away in fright.

    Southern Cassowary

This is one of the most common australian rainforest animals that you will find. They are actually found throughout Australia from tropical forests to grasslands.

They vary greatly in colour and size but generally they grow to about 2m in length and have lighter blotches on a darker background.

They can eat birds and small mammals including a small wallaby!

If you come across one it is unlikely to hurt you, rather slither away in fright.

    Leaf Beetles

There are many different species of beetles in the rainforest but nothing for you to worry about! Some of them are in fact very colourful and even beautiful.

The leaf beetle has lovely colours enabling it to blend in with its environment.

The tend to be found on flowers, beneath bark, on living trees or leaf litter. One of the australian rainforest animals that you should see on your travels.
