The Australian Museum Sydney

"One of the best museums I've been to!"

The Australian Museum is full of interesting exhibitions and bursting with animals to admire and get to know! This is a great museum for everyone and kids are certainly not forgotten about.

In fact many of the exhibitions have been developed with kids in mind which makes for a more entertaining visit!

What's great is the focus on Australian animals and the more unusual ones too.

Opening Times And Admission

The Australian Museum is open every day except Christmas Day.

You do have to pay to get in - about $12 per person or about $30 for a family of 4.

Kids under 5 are free.

Opening times are 9.30am to 5pm

Most of the visiting exhibitions require an additional entry fee- around $5.

So it can make for a fairly expensive day out. But you can spend a good few hours here so overall it is probably worth it - particularly if it's a rainy day.

I have seen queues during the summer school holidays. Also I would try to avoid the first few days of any of the really popular exhibitions, as this tends to be very busy too (e.g. The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition is usually very popular and can get VERY busy on weekends)

What You Can Expect To See

There really is plenty to see here but a few of my favourite permanent exhibitions include:

  • Natural Science Collections - plenty of animals and fossils to explore
  • Australia's unique biodiversity (biodiversity is simply the variety of life)
  • Aboriginal Culture - Find out what Dreamtime is all about
  • The unique wildlife you can find around Sydney
  • For the kids there is a Kids space which is perfect for the under 5's to explore with cubby holes.

There are always a wide variety of visiting exhibitions some of which stay for a few months at a time. The Wildlife Photography of the Year Exhibition is a great exhibition that comes to the Australian museum every summer. The pictures are amazing and they usually have a junior section - these pictures put us all the shame!

There also seems to be a focus around Dinosaurs with full size dinosaurs and landscapes - this seems to be a permanent feature at the museum currently.

This year the museum has been trialling opening up in the evenings and inviting live acts and DJ's to strut their stuff. You can enjoy a few drinks and enjoy the tunes....could be interesting if this takes off.
