Australian Islands

"Find the right island for you"

There really are an incredibly large number of beautiful Australian Islands. This is my second page on exploring the many islands of Australia as there really are so many worthy of comment.

Below are a selection of islands that cover the second half of the alphabet. For more australian islands go to island getaways.

At the bottom of the page you will also find a list of all the islands featured on the two pages. It will give a help as to which island is best for you.

Magnetic Island

Not that well known but perfect for island getaways, particularly if you have kids.

This island has everything and despite being in the Tropical north of Queensland, it boasts to have 320 days of sunshine. The rain doesn't seem to hit here although I'd still skip January through to March if you want to guarantee yourself no rain.

Best time would be October through to December with temperatures dipping slightly in June and July.

You would need to get yourself to Townsville to get the passenger or vehicle ferry over to Magnetic island (there are plenty of ferries every day) The cheap airlines (Virgin Blue) flies to Townsville from Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, making this a good affordable island holiday.

Once on the island you can either enjoy the beaches, snorkel, water sports, tennis or horse riding. Swimming is safe and it's warm enough to swim all year round.

For luxury, stay at Peppers Blue Resort) (From $260) or Mantra one bright Point (ask for a room with a view)

and for the budget end there are a few purpose built backpacker places e.g. Base Backpackers Hostel, Travellers backpacker resort, or Maggie's beach house.

Also try Arkie's resort or Centaur house or Foresthaven tropical resort if you want budget but not backpacker places.

This is affordable

at its best.

It might also be a good destination for australia travel packages. Contact a travel agent to see if they have any good flights and accommodation deals.

Maria Island, off Tasmania

So, if you though Tasmania was unspoiled and beautiful, check out Maria Island.

There is nothing to do here but walk and enjoy the beaches, scenery, bird life and wild life. There are no cars and no shops - rugged Tasmania at its best.

Pick up and drop off is from Hobart and the cost for the 4 day walk is $2000 per person including everything. This is one even the locals don't know about - australian islands hidden gem!

Montague Island, New South Wales

Another hidden gem..This is one of the smallest australian islands off the east coast of Australia between Sydney and Melbourne. It's just after Bateman's Bay (about a 5 hour drive south of Sydney)

!2 visitors can sty in an old lighthouse keepers cottages and enjoy a 3 day eco tour with a personal guide around the island by ranges. You get to see seals and penguins. You can even help out with some nature research projects. Check out naturewise tours

Phillip Island

Many people stop off at Phillip island on their way to or from Melbourne on the coast road that leads back up to Sydney.

Phillip Island is 140km South East of Melbourne and is famous for its penguins that parade across the beach every night at dusk. You need to get here for then!

There's no need to get a boat or anything, as there is a bridge from the main freeway and the island is well signposted.

As you enter the island, stop off at the information centre where you can buy tickets for the penguin parade and the Koala sanctuary.

You can stay here but personally I think its more of a half day trip.

If you want to stay check out Eco Resort or for budget travellers, try Cowes Caravan Park Hotel

Rottnest Island, nr Perth, WA

A fantastic way to spend a day - cycling around one of the most beautiful australian islands with amazing beaches and stunning scenery.

Tasmania

As australian islands go, this is probably not what you would imagine. It's Australia's smallest state and largest island. This is the place for you if you love the great outdoors, walking, scenery and great food.

The Whitsundays

Probably the most known of the australian islands, the Whitsundays are quite simply breathtaking.

If you want total relaxation, pristine beaches and turquoise blue (and warm!) waters. Then the Whitsundays is perfect.

It might also be a good destination for australia travel packages. Contact a travel agent to see if they have any good flights and accommodation deals.
