Entry Requirements - Australia travel Visa

"You can't get in the country without an Australia travel visa"

Unless you are a citizen of New Zealand you will need an Australia travel visa to get into the country.

Whilst it is not a requirement of entry, you should also have some travel insurance. Click here for tips on finding Australian travel insurance

Australia travel Visa

There are a number of options available in terms of getting an Australia travel Visa.

For most people an Australian tourist visa is sufficient but see below for information on working in Australia and staying here for longer.

Australian Tourist Visa

There are two types of Australian Visitors Visa:-

1. ETA - valid for 3 months. Designed for those visiting Australia on holiday or visiting friends/relatives. It's easy to apply on line. This Australia travel Visa is usually granted within 24 hours

2. Australia Tourist Visa - Valid for 3, 6 or 12 months. Designed for those on holiday or visiting friends/relatives who may need to stay longer. Again, this Australia travel visa is usually granted within a couple of days

Both these Australian visas restrict you from working or studying. There is a fee for both.

Once in Australia you can apply for an extension but you are not guaranteed an extention. If your request fails, you have to adhere to the original expiry of your Australian visa.

Working Holiday Visa (417)

Australia has a reciprical agreement with many countries, allowing them to fuel their travel around Australia with some work. This Australia travel visa is very popular.

The following countries take part in the scheme:

Belgium, Canada, Republic of Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Japan, republic of Korea, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan and the UK

The following countries also take part but this visa is called Work and Holiday Visa (462)

Chille, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey and the US

Providing you meet the following criteria, this is an excellent way of earning some cash to pay for your travel. You must be

  • 18-30 years old
  • Hold a valid passport with at least 1 year before expiry
  • No substantial criminal convictions or medical issues
  • Working must be incidental to the main purpose of holidaying
  • You can't work longer than 6 months with one employer
  • Ther are companies that will help you to complete the online form. But unless there are any question marks on any of the above criteria, you should be fine to complete by yourself.

Visas are usually granted in just a couple of days and are valid for 1 year.

You only get the opportunity to have ONE working holiday visa so make the most of your time in Australia!

What if you are over 30?

If you plan to travel when you are 31 and have applied when you are 30, you are still eligible.

If you are older still, then it does become more difficult. Best bet is to come over on a tourist visa and then try and get a company to sponsor you so you can work whilst you are here. This is fairly difficult (although not impossible.) See below section on Staying Longer

    Staying Longer or more Permanently?

Emmigrating to Australia is an exciting proposition and there are a variety of Australian visas.
