Adelaide Central Market
"Adelaide Central Market - A foodie's paradise!"
This is a great market for anyone visiting Adelaide for its culinary expertise. The market is over flowing with fresh fruit and veg, gourmet cheeses, fresh seafood, meats, coffee and more.
The colours are particularly vibrant and you will love meandering through the rows of stalls, trying the produce and enjoying the sights and smells.
It's over 140 years old and has even managed to survive a significant fire. It really has been at the heart of Adelaide for years. It's also one of the key things to do in Adelaide. So make sure it is on your list!
Getting There And Opening Hours
The market is centrally located in Gouger Street which makes it easily accessible and close to all those lovely restaurants which I talk more about in my Adelaide Restaurants page.
It's walkable depending on where you are staying in the city or you can catch the Adelaide connector bus or take the City to Bay tram and get off at Victoria Square.
The Adelaide Central Market is open every day except Monday and Sunday but opening hours do vary by day:Monday - closedTuesday - 7am to 5.30pmWednesday -9am to 5.30pmThursday - 9am to 5.30pmFriday - 7am to 9pmSaturday - 7am to 3pm Sunday - Closed
A Tour Of The Central Market
If you are a foodie then I really would take a guided tour. Whilst there are other food safari's you can do in Adelaide which usually do take in Adelaide Central Market, I would recommend a stand alone tour with Chef's Media and a guy called Mark Gleeson. He is a chef and an ex stall holder.
He really brings the market to life - the stall characters, culinary delights and some history too. Well worth it. Book early though as availability is limited and it is very popular.
Tours are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It usually includes a meal and a 1.5 hour tour of the market. The best one is the morning tour which costs $80 and starts at 8.30am and includes breakfast.
